National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), supports and conducts research on the impact of alcohol use on human health and well-being. It is the largest funder of alcohol research in the world. NIAAA’s HIV/AIDS and Alcohol Research Program was formed to develop and implement the national research agenda to address the intersection between alcohol and HIV/AIDS, including how alcohol affects HIV prevention, the physiological effects of alcohol–HIV/AIDS comorbidity, and treatment implications.
