Thank you for joining AIDS.gov in promoting this important day!

National HIV Testing Day

National HIV Testing Day 2009

On June 27, 2009, AIDS.gov joined many organizations and individuals in recognizing National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). This day serves as an opportunity to reduce HIV testing stigma and promote testing. NHTD was a great success, but encouraging HIV testing is important all year.

WAYS YOU TOOK ACTION (AND CAN CONTINUE TO TAKE ACTION ALL YEAR!)

  • Read Personal Stories

During June, our AIDS.gov blog highlighted several HIV testing story campaigns from organizations such as the National Association of People Living with AIDS Exit Disclaimer, POZ Exit Disclaimer, Southern AIDS Living Quilt Exit Disclaimer, The Positive Project Exit Disclaimer, and others. We developed a video widget (see below) featuring these stories.

  • Share HIV Testing Story Video Widget

Continue to share the widget by copying the code and adding the widget to your website or blog.

Remember the words of President Obama: “By knowing your HIV status you can take control, not only of your own health, but the health of those around you.”

  • Locate HIV Testing Centers via Text Messaging

Continue to encourage HIV testing by telling people to find local HIV testing sites by sending a text message with their ZIP code to “KNOWIT” (566948) or visiting www.HIVtest.org.

Keep promoting KNOWIT by copying the code at http://www.aids.gov/knowit.html and pasting it on your profile, website, or blog.

Spread the word that the site and text messaging code work all year round!

  • Visit the AIDS.gov blog

Read our blog series about NHTD.

  • Twitter

Many of you used the hashtag, #NHTD09, in your tweets about NHTD. Continue to follow AIDS.gov on Twitter.

  • Learn & share info about the CDC’s Act against AIDS Leadership Initiative

The CDC launched a new national domestic HIV campaign called “Act Against AIDS” that aims to reduce HIV incidence in the U.S. Visit the campaign site for videos, banner ads, fact sheets, and more.
