The federal government conducts and supports research regarding HIV/AIDS.

Research

Federal HIV/AIDS Research

The Federal government has supported HIV/AIDS research since the earliest days of the epidemic. Today, Federal funds make up the largest public investment in HIV/AIDS research—totaling $2.8 billion in 2009.

Federal agencies, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are leaders in the field of HIV/AIDS research:

National Institutes of Health

Office of AIDS Research
The NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) coordinates the scientific, budgetary, legislative, and policy elements of NIH’s AIDS research program. OAR sets scientific priorities, enhances collaboration, and ensures that research dollars are invested in high-priority areas that will lead to new tools in the global fight against AIDS. The site provides information about the NIH Strategic Plan, the HIV/AIDS research budget, special initiatives, and resources for researchers.

ClinicalTrials.gov
A registry of Federally and privately supported clinical trials conducted in the United States and around the world. (The site covers clinical trials for multiple medical conditions—not just HIV/AIDS.) This site gives you information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details. This information should be used in conjunction with advice from healthcare professionals.

AIDSinfo–Find an HIV Clinical Trial
This page will help you locate HIV/AIDS clinical trials.

Clinical Trial Participation
Clinical trials are research studies with human volunteers. They are designed to answer specific questions about the safety and/or effectiveness of drugs, vaccines, other therapies, or new ways of using existing treatments. This site provides answers to frequently asked questions about clinical trials.

CDC HIV/AIDS Research

CDC conducts research on multiple aspects of HIV, including prevention, diagnostic, and biomedical research. See CDC’s HIV/AIDS: Research.

HIV/AIDS Journal Articles
Online articles on HIV research made available by permission of the publishing journal.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Research Synthesis Project
This project identifies evidence-based HIV behavioral interventions to help HIV-prevention planners and providers in the U.S. select interventions most appropriate for their communities.

2008 Compendium of EB-HIV Prevention Intervention
These evidence-based interventions represent the strongest HIV behavioral interventions in the literature to date. They have been rigorously evaluated and have demonstrated efficacy in reducing HIV or STD incidence or HIV-related risk behaviors or promoting safer behaviors.
